Initial Teacher Training Census

Description

This document describes the data included in the Initial teacher training performance profiles Official Statistics release’s underlying data files. This data is released under the terms of the Open Government License (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/) and is intended to meet at least 3 stars for Open Data (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2010-to-2015-government-policy-government-transparency-and-accountability/2010-to-2015-government-policy-government-transparency-and-accountability#appendix-3-releasing-data-in-open-and-anonymised-formats). The methodology, found at the bottom of the publication site, should be referenced alongside this data. It provides information on the data sources, their coverage and quality as well as explaining methodology used in producing the data.

Coverage

This release provides provisional  numbers of new entrants to ITT courses starting in the academic year 2022/23. The release also provides revised numbers of new entrants to ITT courses starting in the academic year 2021/22. It includes information on:

• trainee characteristics

File formats and conventions

Suppression

Suppression has been applied to the following personal characteristics:

• Gender

• Disability status

• Ethnic group

Content summary: This national level table contains the number of postgraduate and undergraduate new entrants to ITT by subject, as well as performance against ITT recruitment targets and trainee characteristics for postgraduates. The data in this table covers 2019/20(revised), 2020/21 (revised), 2021/22 (revised) and 2022/23 (provisional).

Disability data is therefore currently unavailable for 2022/23 but available for all other years.

9. EEA National: here relates to individuals with a European Union, European Economic Area or included in the single market- this includes Swiss nationality. The UK is not included in these figures.
10. Warning: percentages have been rounded and therefore may not sum to 100%.
11. Business studies: includes economics.
12. Total Ebacc: EBacc here includes English, mathematics, modern foreign languages, physics, biology, chemistry, history, geography, computing and classics. Trainees on the 'PE with Ebacc' programme are not included.
13. Troops to Teachers are excluded from all figures before 2021/22.
14. Subject: The subject given here is ITT subject and may not be the same as the subject of the undergraduate degree held.
15. Sex other: Sex was previously reported as gender. This has been updated as it was previously mislabelled. For 2021/22 and 2022/23, trainees who chose not to provide data on sex have been included in an 'unknown' category. Prior to this they were included in 'other'.
16. Primary: Prior to 2018/19, a small number of Primary trainees on subject specialist courses were reported against their subject specialism and were included in Total Secondary. From 2018/19, they are reported as Primary.
17. Undergraduate: The majority of undergraduate provision is offered by higher education institutions, except for 95 trainees on undergraduate school centred ITT programmes in 2022/23 and 113 trainees in 2021/22.
18. STEM here includes biology, chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics.
19. Physical Education: includes dance.

6. Mean and median age: ages are calculated after first rounding down the trainee age to the nearest year.
7. Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship: The postgraduate teaching apprenticeship (PGTA) was introduced in 2018/19.
8. Breakdown of ITT new entrant data by disability, for both 2022/23 and revised 2021/22 figures will be published after this initial publication. This is due to issues with the quality of the data. We will be updating the publication to include disability status data once the issue is rectified.
9. Schools direct salaried: includes salaried programmes i.e. Future Teaching Scholars Programme
10. Age groups: are based on the ages of new entrants on the day of the census, 12 October 2022. Ages are rounded down to the nearest year, for example, a trainee aged 29.5 is placed in the 25-29 age group.
11. Disability Status: Data is based on known cases and exclude those where disability status is unknown, therefore please consider the impact of the number of unknowns when considering data trends.
12. Teach First do not offer a part time training option.
13. EEA National: here relates to individuals with a European Union, European Economic Area or included in the single market- this includes Swiss nationality. The UK is not included in these figures.
14. Warning: percentages have been rounded and therefore may not sum to 100%.
15. Other ethnicity includes Arab and Other ethnic background.
16. Asian ethnic group includes Chinese.

20. Full time: Includes a small number of trainees on abridged courses. Abridged courses are intensive full-time courses allowing trainees to achieve qualified teacher status in a shorter timeframe, typically two terms.


6) Postgraduate ITT new entrants by ethnic background
